The Bernard Language School was established in January, 1997 by Mark, Yoko and Bernard Rubiner (1918 - 2002).  Yoko is Bernie's daughter-in-law and is from Sapporo, Japan.  Each saw a need for a different kind of private international language training institution than those existing in Southern Arizona.   Essentially, they wanted to bring together excellent teachers of both English and Japanese who could make language learning the enjoyable and exciting experience it ought to be. 

In addition, they envisioned a natural progressive development that would bring other languages into the School's repertoire.  Also, they wanted to make studying foreign languages accessible to younger students - people who absorb new languages without the same stumbling blocks that adults often experience. Thus was conceived The Bernard Language School.   After only a few months, other languages were indeed added to our programs,  and now Spanish,  French,  Italian, German, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Swedish, Croatian, Arabic and Portuguese have become available.

We operate from a building on North Swan Road in Tucson, a desert city surrounded by majestic 10,000 foot mountains.  Our location is central and allows anyone living in the metropolitan community to reach us in 25 minutes, or less.   Four classrooms serve many of our students while others are taught at their homes or businesses.

Over 1590 students have experienced a language education experience with us since we first opened, and numerous students join classes every week.   Some are relocating to a foreign country, others are marrying a foreign language speaker or someone whose family does not speak English, and many come from other lands where English is not widely used, and we help them along with that language.
